Paper House: Preserving Traditional Craft Through Illustration

A Children's Book by Shu Man Wang

Chinese Joss paper offerings, a symbol in traditional culture, are at risk of being lost in the younger generation. Shu Man Wang's picture book, "Paper House," aims to enhance understanding and appreciation of this endangered craft.

Inspired by Chinese Joss paper offerings, which are traditionally burned as a way to send messages to ancestors and figures in the afterlife, "Paper House" tells the story of a child's grandfather who is a Joss paper offerings maker. The workshop is filled with tools, bamboo, glue, and paper. The child's grandfather creates a paper house offering for a friend who has passed away and also makes one for himself. Shu Man Wang brings this story to life through colorful and diverse paper illustrations, capturing the atmosphere of this traditional craft.

The unique properties of Joss paper offerings lie in their bamboo structure adorned with various types of paper. It is believed that burning these offerings allows the deceased to live better or continue their journey in the afterlife. Shu Man Wang's illustrations beautifully depict the intricate details of the paper house, showcasing the craftsmanship and cultural significance of this traditional art form.

Using computer graphics, Shu Man Wang brings the illustrations to life, creating a visually captivating experience for readers. The book's sketches, drawings, and coloring were done using Photoshop, allowing for precise and vibrant illustrations.

The "Paper House" project began in July 2015 and was completed in January 2016, with publication in March 2016. Throughout the process, extensive research on Joss paper offerings was conducted, including literature reviews, interviews, and field research. The aim was to accurately represent and preserve the cultural heritage of this traditional craft.

One of the challenges faced during the creation of "Paper House" was capturing the emotional and atmospheric aspects of the traditional art through illustrations. Shu Man Wang successfully translated the essence of the craft, evoking a sense of moving emotions within the reader.

"Paper House" by Shu Man Wang is a testament to the importance of preserving traditional crafts and cultural heritage. Through captivating illustrations and a heartfelt story, this children's book aims to educate and inspire younger generations about the endangered art of Joss paper offerings.
