David Chang's Award-Winning Design: Cafe Flo La Rosee

Blending French Elegance with Modern Aesthetics for a Unique Dining Experience

David Chang's Cafe Flo La Rosee, a recipient of the prestigious Golden A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2019, is a testament to the designer's ability to blend French elegance with modern aesthetics, creating a unique dining experience.

Located in Beijing's bustling business center, Dayue City, Cafe Flo La Rosee is a part of the French FLO Group, a leader in the French catering industry with over 200 restaurants worldwide. The restaurant is situated in the overhead courtyard on the sixth floor of a shopping mall, surrounded by public transport space on three sides and close to the mall's main traffic corridor. The location caters to a young demographic, with a high footfall and rapid mobility.

The design of Cafe Flo La Rosee was inspired by the romantic notion of morning dew, or "La Rosee" in French, covering trees in a suburban French forest at dawn. Every detail of the interior decoration is designed to recreate this charming scene. The restaurant's unique features include crystal droplets representing morning dew and vertical copper metal symbolizing tree trunks and branches.

The color scheme of the restaurant is based on magnificent gold and calm blue, with dazzling orange and mysterious dark purple used as accents. The contrast of cold and warm complementary colors gives the space a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is divided into two sides, each with its own unique style and menu, offering traditional French casual meals on one side and a unique blend of creative dishes on the other.

The design process began in August 2017 and was completed in January 2018. The project faced several challenges, including the need to coordinate the restaurant's design style with that of the shopping mall while also highlighting the brand's characteristics. The installation of the restaurant's artistic crystal lamp, chosen to cater to the brand La Rosee, required careful adjustment of each water droplet's suspension line height, viewing angle, and shape.

Despite these challenges, David Chang and his team, including designers Jade Li, Jingjing Wang, Shaoqing Chen, and Jieyi Huang, managed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing space. The lines of the walls, roofs, and floors serve as a natural guide, distinguishing the two sides of the restaurant and creating a clear and moving feeling in the morning that awakens the senses of diners.

David Chang's Cafe Flo La Rosee is a testament to the designer's ability to blend French elegance with modern aesthetics, creating a unique dining experience that has earned it the prestigious Golden A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2019. The design is not only a reflection of Chang's prodigy and wisdom but also a significant contribution to the advancement of art, science, design, and technology.
