The restaurant's design is unique in its ability to capture the essence of an open field without making the space feel too vast or impersonal. Bhatia has created small, intimate spaces within the larger canvas of the restaurant, allowing guests to enjoy their own private areas while still feeling connected to the social atmosphere of the restaurant. This delicate balance between privacy and openness is a key feature of the Roofjar's design.
Located in a boutique hotel, the restaurant overlooks a water body on one side and open farmland on the other, offering guests stunning views from every angle. The design incorporates covered canopies for more private seating and a continuous water body that adds a unique element to the terrace restaurant. The use of mild steel sections throughout the space adds a modern, industrial touch to the overall aesthetic.
The design process for the Roofjar was informed by a detailed analysis of the behavior of people in social spaces such as pubs and restaurants. The research revealed that the choice of seating in such spaces is often influenced by factors such as group size, the need for privacy, and social status. Bhatia used these insights to create a space that caters to a variety of needs and preferences, from large groups seeking a lively atmosphere to couples looking for a cozy corner.
One of the main challenges in the design process was the use of the divided terrace, which led to the theme of divided spaces. The solution was to create a singular space connected by the bar on one side and a mural wall on the other. This design decision not only addressed the challenge of the divided terrace but also added a unique visual element to the restaurant.
In conclusion, the Roofjar is a testament to Devesh Bhatia's innovative approach to design and his ability to create spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience that combines the charm of an open terrace with the comfort of private spaces, making it a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award.
