Airplane Chess: A Stylish Twist on a Classic Board Game

Recreating Nostalgia with Puma's Airplane Chess

In this project for Puma, Leung aimed to create a unique gift for VIPs during the holiday season. Airplane Chess, also known as Ludo, is a popular game from the 80s and 90s that evokes nostalgic memories for many. By incorporating the iconic Puma elements, Leung has not only created a fun and engaging game but also a piece of art that celebrates the brand's identity.

The design process involved careful consideration of the size and details of the Puma suede shoe pieces. Working closely with factory makers, Leung determined the optimal size for the shoe chess pieces and created a 3D model to develop the rest of the playing board and box set. The outer box, made of cardboard, mimics the material of an actual shoebox, while the paper game board maintains the traditional feel of the original game.

Opening the large shoebox reveals a playing board and eight smaller shoe boxes, each containing a pair of suede shoe pieces in different colors. These shoes act as the chess pieces, adding a unique and stylish twist to the game. Players can follow the rules and enjoy a game that combines the joy of childhood memories with the sophistication of Puma's design.

The Airplane Chess project began in November 2018 in Hong Kong and was completed in December 2018. The design team faced challenges in developing the 3D model of the Puma Suede and ensuring the rest of the game's components were proportionate to the shoes. However, their efforts paid off, as the game set successfully evokes childhood memories and creates new experiences for players.

Airplane Chess has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award honors designs that showcase technical and creative skills while contributing to quality of life improvements. By reimagining a classic board game with Puma's iconic elements, Benny Leung has created a design that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.
