Stef Rymenants' Award-Winning Illustrations: Every Day of The Week

Blending Cubism, Surrealism, and Medieval Stained Glass Artistry

The project's inspiration stems from various art movements including cubism from the interwar period, surrealism, and the intricate designs of medieval stained glass windows. Rymenants' love for stylization and classical human figure drawing with a surreal twist is evident in each illustration, making the series a unique blend of different art forms.

Each illustration in the series represents a day of the week, reflecting the emotions associated with each day. The illustrations were created using pencil and then colored digitally, a technique that Rymenants employs to add depth and a natural feel to the drawings. The result is a series of seven unique drawings, each with its own personality and charm.

The project was created over a period of eight days, with Rymenants creating a new drawing each day and posting it on his blog. The series was later exhibited in Evere and Arendonk in Belgium and made available as limited edition prints. The digital artwork was produced in a 50 x 35 mm format with a resolution of 300dpi, ensuring high-quality prints.

Creating the series was not without its challenges. Rymenants notes that the drawings refer to stained glass compositions in Roman and Gothic churches, and adjusting figures and objects to fit within the basic composition lines was a complex task. However, through extensive sketching and research, including the use of magazines, the internet, and his own life drawing studies, Rymenants was able to overcome these challenges and create a series of illustrations that are both visually stunning and deeply symbolic.

In recognition of his creativity and technical expertise, Rymenants was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2018. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and Rymenants' "Every Day of The Week" series certainly fits the bill. The series not only showcases Rymenants' artistic skill and technical prowess but also his ability to evoke emotion and tell a story through his illustrations.
