Joe Chan's Award-Winning Design: Sunac Sanya Haitang Bay Sales Center

Neo-Chinese Aesthetics Meet Contemporary Architecture in a Unique Sales Center

Joe Chan, a design director well-versed in Oriental culture, has created an innovative sales center in Sanya, China. The Sunac Sanya Haitang Bay Sales Center, a project that marries traditional Chinese elements with contemporary architectural forms, has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.

Chan's design inspiration stemmed from the project's environment, surrounded by mountains and rivers. This led him to utilize the metaphor of "moon and mountain" to manipulate space, resulting in an Oriental space that aligns with international and contemporary aesthetics. The design's unique properties lie in its extraction of the traditional Chinese element "wooden lattices". These lattices, combined with modern architectural forms, serve as space partitions, creating transparent and open patterns that unify the overall grand and elegant tone of the center.

The Sunac Sanya Haitang Bay Sales Center was realized using a variety of materials including desert metals and stones, Baikimi yellowish brown stones, Mongolian black stones, ashlar bricks, art paintings, coppers, leathers, smoked oaks, and featured stones. The project was launched in August 2017 in Haitang Bay, Sanya, and completed in December of the same year.

Chan faced several challenges during the design process. The project timeline was tight, with only four months given for completion. The client also requested a new Chinese style for the sales hall, which was more than 10 meters high and featured windows and doors that led to over-lighting of the entire space. This posed a significant challenge to creating a Chinese-style secluded atmosphere. However, Chan overcame this by using wooden-lattice screen partitions to reduce the light without causing the space to be dark. A ceiling made of mirror material was also used to extend the whole space.

The design was not only meant to serve as a sales center but also as a place for exchanging art and culture. This was in line with the high-end "Sunac-style" life values that the client hoped to portray. The project was a collaborative effort, with Jianyue Cao and Chenglong Lin also contributing to the design process.

In conclusion, the Sunac Sanya Haitang Bay Sales Center is a testament to Joe Chan's ability to blend traditional Chinese elements with contemporary design. The project's recognition with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019 further underscores its innovative and unique design approach.
