Birds of Steel: A Multifunctional Panel Design by Malcolm White

Combining Form, Movement, and Discovery

Birds of Steel is a unique and innovative design by Malcolm White that brings energy and movement to laser cut artwork. Inspired by the challenge of creating a design that holds together while showcasing the beauty of New Zealand's native birds, White has crafted a series of panels that not only captivate the eye but also serve multiple functions.

White's design features positive and negative shapes intricately cut out of steel, creating a sense of form and movement. Each panel is carefully linked to the next, allowing for a seamless flow and balance between the different scenes. The first panel represents Cathedral Cove, with its large cutout symbolizing the entrance of a cave. The last panel mirrors the shape of the first, depicting Mt Cook, and creating a harmonious connection between the three panels.

These multifunctional panels can be used in various settings, from backlit wall features to fence structures that allow sunlight to pass through. The interplay between natural light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the artwork, transforming it into a dynamic three-dimensional space.

White's design process involved hand-drawing the initial concepts, which were then refined using Adobe Illustrator. The final designs were sent to a laser cutting company, where they were expertly cut out of steel, aluminum, or other materials as per the clients' preferences. The result is a stunning display of artistry and craftsmanship.

Not only does Birds of Steel showcase the beauty of New Zealand's native birds and scenery, but it also serves as a celebration of innovation and technology. The panels interact with their surroundings, creating a visual spectacle that captivates and inspires.

Malcolm White's Birds of Steel project began in June 2018 and was completed in August 2018. It has since garnered recognition and acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges the design's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With Birds of Steel, Malcolm White has not only created a visually stunning piece of artwork but also a versatile and functional design that can enhance any space. Whether used as a wall feature, garden decoration, or architectural element, these panels bring a sense of movement, energy, and discovery to their surroundings.
