Connection Taiwan: A Poster Design Bridging Cultures

Introducing Taiwanese Literature to the Global Stage

The poster design for the Connection Taiwan conference by Huang Jia-Zhen showcases the unique connection between Taiwan and the world through a visually stunning gradient transformation. This design aims to reintroduce Taiwanese literature to a global audience, expanding the horizons of literary discourse.

The theme of the conference, Connection Taiwan, emphasizes the importance of Taiwan's place in the global context. Huang Jia-Zhen, the designer, cleverly employs gradient shapes to correlate the outline of Taiwan with a circular globe, symbolizing the establishment of connections. The gradient outlines also resemble contour lines and signal waves, representing communication between Taiwan and other nations.

What sets this design apart is its ability to capture the essence of Taiwan's literary discourse and present it in a visually striking manner. The theme of Connection Taiwan focuses on expanding the range and scale of literary texts, turning Taiwanese transnational literary discourse into a comprehensive study. By visually representing this theme through the gradient transformation, the design highlights the importance of Taiwan's literary contributions on a global scale.

The realization of this design involved experimenting with different colors and widths to achieve the desired gradient effect. The blurring of Taiwan's outline through the gradient transformation creates a visually captivating image that draws attention to the connection between Taiwan and the world.

The technical specifications of the poster are 594 x 841 mm, while the invitation measures 70 x 112 mm and the glass is sized at 125 x 88 mm. These specifications were carefully chosen to ensure the design's impact and readability.

Despite the creative challenges posed by the use of gradient lines and colors, the designer found a solution in cold foil finishing. This technique allowed the original design to be preserved while maintaining the desired visual effect.

The Connection Taiwan poster was initially used to promote a literary seminar, calling for paper submissions and facilitating communication with foreign scholars. It was displayed in universities across Taiwan, generating interest and fostering connections with the global literary community. The design was later adapted for derivative products, further extending its reach and impact.

The Connection Taiwan design project took place at the National Chung Hsing University from October 13-14, 2018. Throughout the project, extensive research was conducted to improve Taiwan's international recognition and highlight its cultural resources. The design successfully achieved its objective by visually representing the connection between Taiwan and the global world through symbolic communication.

This exceptional design by Huang Jia-Zhen has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
