Smooth Sailing: A Luxurious Nautical Retreat in Hong Kong

A Premier Class Cinema Experience

With the idea of creating the same vibe as a super yacht, the main living area of the Smooth Sailing design embodies a luxurious nautical sense of style. Designer Cameron Kam Hin Lun focused on curvaceous lines and plush colors to create a sense of affluence. The result is a rich and sumptuous space that perfectly meets the unique requirements of the clients.

In the lounge, a vast expanse of warm wooden flooring reaches all the way towards the floor-to-ceiling windows, offering unrivaled views of Hong Kong's famous harbor. To prevent the room from overheating, the designer added heavy blackout curtains that also create a cinema-like atmosphere. In the middle of the room, a contemporary cream sofa curves its way around a rich purple rug, introducing a "Premier Class" cinema experience to the proceedings.

The galley kitchen has been opened up by removing one of the walls, making the space feel more expansive. Two deep red armchairs add a hint of character and color. A sliding TV wall made of steel and leather discreetly hides the owner's state-of-the-art AV equipment. The master bedroom features an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet. The wall behind the wash basin features curved lines, echoing the oceanic style found elsewhere in the property.

This 1,294 square feet apartment posed a challenge as the owners wanted to create a space that could be used as a private cinema. Despite its relatively small floorplan, the property originally consisted of four rooms. Designer Cameron Kam Hin Lun reworked the layout to optimize the use of space, repurposing rooms to accommodate a master en suite bathroom, walk-in closet, and an open-plan living and dining room.

Located on the top floor of the building, the Smooth Sailing design offers sweeping views of Victoria Harbour. The large stained glass-style windows introduce natural lighting and create a sense of nature with leaf-patterned shadows on the floor. The living room's creative combination of luxurious nautical and natural themes offers a Premier Class cinema experience, similar to that of a luxury yacht gracing the waters of Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour.

The Smooth Sailing design was brought to life using a combination of steel, wood, mirror, leather, and fabric. The project started in April 2018 and was completed in December 2018 in Hong Kong. The implementation of the Smart Living System, which provides all-in-one control of electrical devices, was an important aspect of the design. Additionally, careful selection and installation of curtains were crucial to achieving a high-quality cinema experience by preventing light penetration.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. The award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the Smooth Sailing design, which authentically captures the essence of luxury and incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. It is a testament to the strong technical and creative skills of designer Cameron Kam Hin Lun and his team, as well as their contribution to improving the quality of life through innovative design.
