Carp Leap: A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Aesthetics

Designers Xiang Qian, Deng Zhehao, and Yao Wenliang Reimagine Tea Packaging

The Carp Leap, a tea packaging design by Xiang Qian, Deng Zhehao, and Yao Wenliang, combines traditional Oriental elements with modern aesthetics, creating a visual communication that resonates with contemporary young target groups. This design, which won the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2020, is a testament to the power of design in bridging the gap between the old and the new.

The inspiration for the Carp Leap came from black tea, a traditional Oriental tea that has left a deep impression on people's minds over time. The challenge was to integrate this ancient and lasting impression with modern aesthetic principles. The designers found that the development of traditional Oriental elements with modern aesthetic standards is an extremely accurate and effective means. Thus, the Carp Leap was born.

The unique properties of the Carp Leap lie in its architecture, which combines the traditional elements in the appropriate symbolic meaning with the story content targeted at the population. The design abandons the simple element adornment gimmick commonly used on the market, instead connecting to the target population from the depth of the connotation of the need.

The Carp Leap was realized using a bronzing process three-dimensional embossing bronzing embossing version, mounted plate hard box shell, shell cover concave and convex indentation texture process, skin paper material origami handbag, and internal quiet shock absorbing sponge fixed position. The cup was built using crystal glaze. The overall size of the design is x35.5cm * y25.5cm * z6.75cm.

The design was created with the target of entrepreneurs in mind. The Chinese elements illustration, lamp, and the experience accumulated similar stories is the starting point of the design. The design works by creating a gift for the buyer that has a value that penetrates the heart.

The Carp Leap was created between June and August 2018 in Changsha, Hunan province, China. The design project involved extensive research on business gift products, with the aim of finding the essential demand behind such products. The designers conducted research, simulation, inquiry, and analysis, using tools such as inspiration board, mind map, and database.

The greatest challenge in developing the Carp Leap was satisfying the preferences of buyers with different industry backgrounds, majors, and preferences, with a strong sense of ceremony and profound cultural heritage. However, the designers were able to overcome this challenge, creating a design that is both unique and deeply rooted in tradition.
