Pods: Innovative Meeting Spaces for Modern Offices

Revolutionizing Office Design with Contemporary Meeting Pods

Designed by Sean Bradley

In today's fast-paced business world, office spaces need to adapt to the changing needs of their employees. With the influx of new hires and limited budgets for expansion, finding innovative solutions to create private meeting spaces has become a challenge. Enter Pods, the brainchild of designer Sean Bradley, offering a contemporary and non-obtrusive solution to this common problem.

Bradley's inspiration for Pods came during his time working with his father in a large office in Dublin, Ireland. As an architecture student on summer break, he was asked for his opinion on extending the offices to accommodate the growing team. Instead, he proposed a piece of furniture that could be placed in the underutilized spaces of the building's lobbies, providing private meeting spaces without the need for costly expansions.

What sets Pods apart from other meeting spaces is their unique design and functionality. These meeting pods are specifically designed to address the challenges faced by offices worldwide. The sound-insulated foam and dome shape create a secluded environment, ensuring privacy during important discussions. The contemporary aesthetics of Pods seamlessly blend with any office decor, making them a versatile addition to any workspace.

When it comes to the realization of the design, Bradley collaborated with his father, a skilled carpenter with 20 years of experience. Together, they built 1:10 and eventually 1:1 prototypes, carefully considering the size and movability of the pods. The symmetrical design allows for easy transportation, as they can be halved and maneuvered through standard doorways.

The technical specifications of Pods are as follows: Width 2440mm x Depth 1180mm x Height 2150mm. These dimensions were meticulously chosen to ensure optimal functionality and comfort for users.

Bradley's research for Pods involved exploring famous examples of woodwork furniture, particularly those designed by architects such as Mies Van Der Rohe's iconic Barcelona Chair. This research influenced the design process, resulting in a piece of furniture that not only serves its purpose but also adds a touch of architectural elegance to the office environment.

Building the 1:1 prototype proved to be the most challenging part of the design process. Even with the assistance of his father, the duo had to learn upholstery techniques to perfect the seats. This hands-on experience highlighted design issues that may have been overlooked during the initial stages of the project.

Pods were completed between May and September 2015, providing a timely solution for offices in need of additional meeting spaces. Their success lies in their simplicity and passive sound absorption, creating an environment conducive to productive discussions.

Recognized for its practicality and innovation, Pods received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This accolade is a testament to the design's ability to meet professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.

With Pods, offices can now embrace a flexible and efficient approach to their spatial needs, fostering collaboration and productivity in a stylish and contemporary setting.
