Xin Chen's Square or Circle chair is a remarkable fusion of traditional Chinese instrument Liuqin and the Italian Strozzi chair. With this design, Chen aims to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western cultures and provide a unique experience for modern audiences.
The most intriguing feature of the Square or Circle chair is its ability to be disassembled into individual pieces, which can then be rearranged and transformed into a representation of the Liuqin. This innovative design allows for both functional and aesthetic needs to be met, while also providing easy transportation as all parts can be dismantled.
Made from cherry and walnut wood, fiber rope, and hardware, the chair is held together by tension rather than glue, nails, or screws. This unique construction method adds to the chair's visual appeal and showcases the designer's skill in joinery.
The Square or Circle chair measures 432mm x 534mm x 1143mm and can be easily taken apart for transportation. Its versatility and cultural significance make it a standout piece in any space.
Chen's design research for this project aimed to inspire people to appreciate furniture in a different way. By incorporating Chinese elements such as the color red and the yin and yang symbol, the chair represents Chinese culture and traditions.
The Square or Circle chair was exhibited at The 22nd International Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Fine Craft in Wayne, PA, USA in December 2016. Since then, it has garnered attention for its innovative design and cultural significance.
Recognized for its excellence, the Square or Circle chair was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges the chair's well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities that meet professional and industrial requirements.
With the Square or Circle chair, Xin Chen has created a truly unique and culturally significant piece of furniture. Its ability to transform and represent different cultures makes it a captivating addition to any space.
