Airport Bremen: A Wayfinding System with a Modern Twist

Thomas Geissert's Award-Winning Design Enhances Passenger Experience

Thomas Geissert's innovative wayfinding system at Airport Bremen combines modern design and functionality to create a calm and intuitive environment for passengers. This design, which won a Silver A' Design Award, is characterized by its high contrast colors, modern typography, and clear information hierarchy.

Geissert's design inspiration was to create a balanced and calm atmosphere without visual disturbances. The choice of typography, icons, lighting, and coloring were all carefully selected to make orientation easier for international guests. The use of the new font, Fago OT from Ole Schäfer, and the introduction of high contrast colors were crucial in achieving this goal. The design focuses on functional and psychological aspects such as good visibility, readability, and barrier-free information.

What sets this design apart is its unique identity and originality. The system is characterized by its modern, contemporary appearance with modern classic typography. The calm appearance promotes safety, confidence, and deceleration among passengers. A contrasting modern design and a clear information hierarchy characterize this new system. The orientation system is easy to use and contributes positively to the service quality of the airport.

The realization of this design involved the use of new aluminum cases with contemporary, optimized LED illumination for the signage system. The airport also introduced new flight information display screens (FIDS) throughout its terminal complex. The screen designs were created by teamgeissert and displayed on NEC MultiSync V651 models.

The design process began in 2012 and was completed in 2018. The design team included Thomas Geissert and Anne Wichmann. The wayfinding system works simply, safely, quickly, and intuitively. It not only guides and accompanies the passengers, but also makes the space tangible, thus creating identification and identity.

The design faced several challenges, one of which was creating a distinctive arrow element suitable for the newly designed pictograms. Despite these challenges, the design was successful and was awarded Silver in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2020. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
