Monk is not just a typeface; it is a harmonious blend of Latin and Arabic languages, designed to communicate seamlessly in both. The design process was parallel, allowing both languages to share counters, stem thickness, and curved forms. This shared geometry gives the typeface a balanced harmony and grace, making it stand out in the realm of typeface design.
The design's unique properties lie in its origins. The Benedictine and Franciscan writing, stored in and around Umbria in central Italy, served as the foundation for this modern typeface. The challenge was to create a modern typeface based on historical research, which was successfully overcome by the design team led by Paul Robb.
The design was realized using Fontographer and is available as a True Type and Open Source Font. The project started in 2017 and was completed in September 2018 in Perugia, Italy. The design team included Paul Henry Robb, Naser Imache, and Tommaso Calderini.
The Monk typeface is more than just a design; it's a dialogue between religions, cultures, and languages. It seeks a balance between the openness and legibility of humanist sans serifs and a more regularized character of the square sans serif. The design's strength lies in its ability to integrate Western words seamlessly into Arabic text, creating a harmonious blend of cultures and languages.
Monk's design is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in bridging cultural and linguistic gaps. It's a celebration of shared geometry and balanced harmony, a testament to the power of design in fostering understanding and unity. The Silver A' Design Award is a well-deserved recognition of this outstanding design.
