Listening to Transparency: An Exhibition of Sound Art

Exploring the Intersection of Sound and Visual Design

Listening to Transparency was an exhibition consisting of 44 audio and visual art works, held at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum from May to September 2017. Focusing on spatialization design and the use of transparent materials, this unique exhibition showcased the ability of art to convey the meaning of transparency through visual expression.

The visual design of the exhibition, created by Xulei Li, was inspired by circular waves representing sound sources. These waves, with their various angles, curvatures, and colors, gave the visual elements a transparent look, symbolizing the transient and untouchable nature of sound. The font used in the design was the traditional Chinese font Song, adding an aura of China to the overall aesthetic. Additionally, the colors chosen matched those of France's National Flag, symbolizing the cultural communication between China and France.

What sets this exhibition apart is the innovative production and design extension. The font and circular sound wave elements were separated, with the font silk-screen printed on transparent PVC material in a gradual changing dot grid, and the sound waves printed on paper. When combined, these two layers created a complete visual experience. This design choice drew the audience's attention to the title and theme of the exhibition. As they turned the pages of the text, the hidden sound waves were revealed, enticing them into the world of sound.

The realization of this design involved special color printing techniques. The font was silk-screen printed on transparent PVC material using a gradual changing dot grid, while the sound wave elements were printed on cotton paper using Risograph technology. The result was a visually stunning and immersive experience for the audience.

Interactivity was also a key aspect of the exhibition. By scanning the poster or key visuals with a dedicated app, visitors could access additional digital content, such as promotional films of the exhibition, enhancing their overall experience.

Listening to Transparency was not without its challenges. The visual design had to harmonize with the artworks and the overall tone of the museum. Xulei Li successfully achieved this balance, creating a cohesive and visually captivating exhibition.

This exceptional design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 in the category of Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Listening to Transparency exemplifies these qualities, contributing to improvements in the quality of life and making the world a better place.
