Bali Dawn: A New Layout for a Bright and Airy Living Space

Breaking the Limits of Urban Housing

The residential apartment design, Bali Dawn, by Benson Wu, challenges the traditional layout of urban housing to create a bright and airy living space. By incorporating innovative design elements and optimizing spatial utility, this project offers a unique and refreshing take on modern living.

The inspiration for Bali Dawn came from the limitations of plain urban housing with copied layouts and models. Benson Wu sought to break free from these rigid constraints and create a layout that maximizes natural light, blends easy moving lines, and evokes an urban resort feel.

What sets Bali Dawn apart from other designs is its emphasis on direct sunlight and spatial optimization. The balcony is extended and a glass box is added to showcase plants and the bathroom, allowing natural light to flood the interior. Huge French windows at the other end of the apartment provide ample sunlight, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere.

The removal of rigid partitions between the living room and the dining kitchen further enhances spatial utility. By incorporating multiplexing and diagonal moving lines in the design, Benson Wu has created a space that is both functional and visually appealing. The sophisticated materials and attention to detail in the furnishings showcase a free-spirited mindset and a sense of luxury in everyday life.

In terms of realization technology, Bali Dawn prioritizes direct sunlight. The narrow interior is opened up on both ends to allow for maximum natural light. A glass box is strategically placed in the middle of the interior to bring in additional light and create a wide and bright feel. The rotating glass door in the bedroom serves as a flexible partition, providing privacy when needed while still allowing ample sunlight to penetrate the space.

The technical specifications of Bali Dawn highlight the diverse looks created by changes in direct sunlight. The master bedroom, public zone, and bathroom seamlessly blend romantic natural elements with modern sleekness. The diagonal partition of the layout adds flexibility and usability to the space, subtly defining different areas within the interior. The integration of storage against the wall with marble veneers and the use of vivid tones and fancy metal components in the Zen grids showcase a synergy of modern and traditional design.

Bali Dawn encourages interaction and connectivity among family members. The widened dining kitchen extends into the living room, creating a space that is perfect for entertaining guests. Glass partitions, doors, and windows replace unnecessary walls, allowing family members to spot and interact with each other from any point in the home. Privacy and airiness are seamlessly balanced, resulting in a harmonious living environment.

The Bali Dawn project was completed in Taiwan in 2020. The design process involved overcoming challenges such as ensuring ample natural lighting while considering the safety and structural integrity of the building. Through careful research and innovative solutions, Benson Wu successfully transformed a dim and narrow space into a bright and inviting home.

Bali Dawn has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges the practicality, innovation, and professional execution of the design, contributing to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
