Reviving Tradition in Modern Packaging: Chaozhousanbao

Handmade Woodcut Prints Elevate Food Packaging Design

Zhen Yang and Jialu Yang, along with their design team, have crafted a unique food packaging design for "Chaozhousanbao", using traditional woodcut prints to convey a sense of cultural heritage and natural simplicity.

The design inspiration for "Chaozhousanbao" packaging came from the desire to highlight the unique temperament of Chaozhou's three treasures. The design team, consisting of Zhen Yang, Jialu Yang, Hu Yubin, Lin Yiqing, and Li Feng, chose to use handmade woodcut prints to carve the main elements and fonts. This method, reminiscent of ancient Chaozhou traditions, brings a unique texture and detail to the packaging, emphasizing its natural simplicity and cultural accumulation.

The design's unique properties lie in its choice of subject and execution. The "Three Treasures of Chaozhou" serve as the design object, their representation carved and printed by hand. This technique, coupled with the use of screen printing and handmade paper, enhances the packaging's unique texture and detail, making it stand out in the market.

Realized in November 2019, the design project is a testament to the team's courage to explore new areas of design language. They focused on the experimental expression, experimentation, and innovation of design concepts, viewing design as a re-creation of life attitudes and new ideas. The team believes that design, like traditional art, can span time and space and convey human civilization.

The team's efforts and innovative approach have not gone unnoticed. Their design for "Chaozhousanbao" was awarded Silver in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2021. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The designs admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

In conclusion, the "Chaozhousanbao" packaging design by Zhen Yang and Jialu Yang, with its handmade woodcut prints and cultural references, is a perfect example of how traditional art forms can be revived and given new life in modern design. It is a testament to the power of design to convey cultural heritage and create a unique, engaging product.
