Pu Shine: A Zen-Inspired Resort Hotel by Min Liu

Blending Japanese Minimalism with Chinese Landscape in a Harmonious Symbiosis

In the heart of Jinfo Hills, Chongqing, China, a unique resort hotel, Pu Shine, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of Japanese minimalism and Chinese landscape. The brainchild of designer Min Liu, the hotel embodies the concept of Zen, offering a tranquil retreat for weary souls.

Min Liu's inspiration for Pu Shine stemmed from an ancient Chinese poem, "Zen," which speaks of the unity of heart and spirit. The hotel, through its design and services, aims to provide a serene environment where guests can rejuvenate their body and mind, shedding their burdens and returning to their original heart. The design of the hotel, close to human scale, further enhances this experience.

What sets Pu Shine apart is its unique cultural exchange and integration. It is a hotel built with Japanese Zen and minimalist style amidst Chinese mountains and rivers. This blend of cultures gives birth to a new culture, one that is man-made yet seems heavenly. The unity of nature and man, the natural and the skillful, is the highest level of "living" and is the essence of Pu Shine.

The realization of Pu Shine involved careful planning and execution. Upon entering the hotel, guests are greeted by a flower bed with dry landscape elements flanked by the hotel's catering facilities and guest houses. A red steel structure bridge extends from the Central Waterfront of the two groups of buildings, leading straight into the canyon. Light is introduced into the room in the empty patio in the lobby atrium, creating an interaction between sunlight and the color inside the space.

The guest rooms are designed with a soft tone and excellent selection, offering a truly dark state for a restful sleep. To ensure guests' comfort, a button that needs to wake up the luminous button by induction is enabled in all guest rooms. This button lights up only when reached for, truly achieving intelligent care and energy conservation.

The project, which started in September 2016 and completed in June 2020, faced several challenges. The most difficult part was building natural buildings in the narrow canyon and integrating garden construction into the environment. The transportation of engineering materials in deep mountains was inconvenient, and environmental protection problems during construction were serious. However, the team overcame these challenges by choosing the most environmentally friendly straw paint and the simplest Japanese wooden structure, integrating design with nature.

Pu Shine was awarded Silver in A' Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design Award in 2022, a testament to its innovative and remarkable design. This hotel, with its Zen-inspired design and harmonious blend of cultures, stands as a beacon of tranquility and rejuvenation amidst the bustling world.
