Chengdu NBD Centre: A Green, Low Carbon Icon

Wai Tang and Kelvin Chu's Award-Winning Architecture

Chengdu NBD Centre, a groundbreaking architectural project by Wai Tang and Kelvin Chu, is a testament to innovative design and sustainable practices. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, and realization technology behind this world-class structure.

The Chengdu NBD Centre was inspired by the congestion of first-tier cities in China, particularly Chengdu. The designers saw an opportunity to address this issue by reducing above-ground traffic and seamlessly integrating the building with the planned metro lines 6 and 9. This resulted in a fully integrated Transport Orientated Development (TOD).

Located near Jiaozi Park, Guixi Ecological Park, and the Jinjiang River, the Chengdu NBD Centre is a significant landmark in the Jiaozi Park business district. The design extends the park into the development, creating a new cultural icon for Chengdu and a green, low carbon public realm for the city.

Wai Tang and Kelvin Chu collaborated with Atelier 10, a world-class environmental consultant, to create a breathing façade for the Chengdu NBD Centre. This feature maximizes natural ventilation for most of the year and contributes to the building's PRC 3 Star Green Building status. The building also features grey water collection and a multi-level green roof system. The façade integrates media LED, creating an elegant and functional design.

The Chengdu NBD Centre covers an area of 171,650m2 and consists of a 120m twin office tower. The building is divided into three sections: Below Ground, Podium, and Main Towers. These sections are interconnected by pockets of public realm. The Below Ground retail connects the underground connections and metro lines into the development, while a large sunken civic plaza draws visitors to the ground level. The Main Towers house various types of digital media and cultural offices, digital art galleries, and exhibition centres.

The Chengdu NBD Centre was awarded Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing. The Chengdu NBD Centre is not just a building; it is a testament to the power of innovative design and sustainable practices.
