Stories of Communication: A Visual Identity Design

Bringing History to Life Through Design

The design project "Stories of Communication" by Mengyi Xie pays tribute to the rich history of communication and commemorates the 15th anniversary of the School of Communication at ECNU. Through a visually captivating logo and a family of sub-logos, this design showcases the evolution of communication technology and highlights the importance of human wisdom and creativity.

The main logo of the project features a geometrical graphic with the numeral 15, symbolizing the milestone anniversary. Building upon this foundation, a family of 100 sub-logos was created, each representing a significant story, invention, or initiative in the history of communication. From the ancient Quipu, knotted strings used for information collection, to the modern age of artificial intelligence, this logo family chronicles the progress of communication technology throughout human history.

Utilizing Adobe's software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, the design team brought this concept to life. The physical application of the design varied in size, allowing for its integration into various mediums such as posters, invitations, pamphlets, flyers, and online communication materials. The team also designed background screens and display walls featuring the logo families at the anniversary event. Additionally, postcards, canvas bags, and bottled beverages adorned with the sub-logo graphics and stories were distributed as souvenirs to alumni and staff.

Extensive research was conducted to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the chosen stories. The design team consulted historical materials from books, articles, and the internet, as well as engaged in discussions with teachers and specialists in mass media studies. The selection process aimed to identify the most important stories in communication history, a task that required meticulous analysis and collaboration.

One of the major challenges faced during the project was determining which stories held the most significance in communication history. The design team invested considerable time and effort in searching for materials, consulting experts, and conducting thorough research to make informed decisions.

The visual identity design of "Stories of Communication" has received recognition for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making a positive impact on society.

The "Stories of Communication" project serves as a testament to the power of design in capturing the essence of history and celebrating the achievements of the School of Communication. Through its visually captivating logos and sub-logos, this design highlights the evolution of communication technology and the enduring importance of human innovation and creativity.
