Daan L: A Subtractive Approach to Residential Design

Creating a Consistent and Relaxing Space

The Daan L project, designed by An Zhi Zheng of Behinddesign, takes a unique approach to residential design, focusing on creating a consistent and relaxing space for the homeowner. By utilizing a subtractive design method and carefully selecting materials, this project achieves a sense of unity and tranquility throughout the entire space.

Unlike traditional residential spaces that often feature a mix of cabinets, materials, and furniture, Daan L stands out for its organized and consistent design. The goal was to create a space that feels cohesive and visually pleasing, without overwhelming the senses. To achieve this, the design team utilized a subtractive approach, removing unnecessary variations and thicknesses of cabinets to create a streamlined and harmonious environment.

The use of consistent materials throughout the space plays a key role in extending the overall sense of space without causing visual fatigue. Wood grain, artistic coatings, and the natural texture of marble were chosen to decorate the space, avoiding any artificial or excessive embellishments. This approach not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also creates a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

The layout of the 120-square-meter space was carefully considered to maximize visual flow and openness. By opening up the public area without partitions and allowing the natural corridor to connect different spaces, the overall visual sense of space is increased. This design choice makes each area visible from various angles, creating a sense of unity and spaciousness.

One of the standout features of Daan L is the main TV wall, which showcases an artistic coating in the same color as the rest of the walls. This choice integrates the spatial consistency while defining the visual design of the TV wall. Additionally, natural marble flooring and carefully selected wooden textures add depth and character to the space, creating a relaxing and resonant environment for the homeowner.

Throughout the design process, the team also considered the homeowner's need for a peaceful and stress-free environment. Indirect lighting was incorporated to add a gentle ambiance to the space, providing a soothing atmosphere for the homeowner to unwind after a busy day. The design of the bed board also took into account Feng-Shui principles, ensuring that the bed is not placed under a beam and avoiding sharp angles facing the bed.

The Daan L project, located in Taipei City, Taiwan, is a testament to the power of subtraction and consistency in residential design. By carefully selecting materials, organizing the space, and incorporating thoughtful details, An Zhi Zheng and the Behinddesign team have created a space that is both visually stunning and harmonious.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exemplify creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
