Parrot and Human: A Unique Residential House Design

Creating a Pet-Friendly Space for a Harmonious Coexistence

The Parrot and Human design by Chia Hao Tung is a residential house that beautifully embodies the love and connection between a couple and their beloved parrot. With its unique features and thoughtful design elements, this space creates a harmonious coexistence between humans and their feathered companion.

Inspired by the couple's deep love for their parrot, the design incorporates elements that symbolize the bond between species. The triangular roof in the common area creates the image of a birdcage, representing a family of three under the same roof. This design choice not only adds visual interest but also brings every family member closer together.

To cater to the needs of the parrot, the entryway is adorned with ironworks that serve as perches. This allows the parrot to comfortably rest and interact with its human companions. The use of veneer and plants throughout the space creates an earthy vibe and a beautiful natural aesthetic, further enhancing the connection between nature and the residents.

What sets the Parrot and Human design apart is its careful consideration of both the residents' living style and the habits of the parrot. The space is designed to be pet-friendly, ensuring that the needs of each family member are met. Abundant organic wooden elements infuse warmth into the space, evoking a sense of being surrounded by the depths of a forest. The trusses and ironworks on the walls provide perching spots for the parrot, allowing it to feel at home.

The realization of this design is made possible through the use of various technologies and materials. Layered environmental protection materials, such as calcium silicate board and bamboo charcoal, are used to ensure a healthy living environment. Anti-formaldehyde latex paint, mineral paint, and moisture-proof plastic plywood are employed to enhance durability and aesthetics. Customized iron parts, tempered glass, and flame-proof and antibacterial curtains complete the design, creating a space that is both functional and visually appealing.

In terms of specifications, the Parrot and Human design encompasses an entrance, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a bedroom, a semi-open study room, and a bathroom within a 56 square meter space. Each area is carefully designed to maximize functionality and comfort, while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout.

The interaction within the space is carefully considered to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for both the residents and the parrot. The open floor plan in the common area allows natural light to flood the space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hexagonal tiles in the entryway not only add visual interest but also serve as a practical solution to keep dust out of the living area. The colors of low chroma in this transition zone create a stable visual sense, gradually transitioning from the outside to the inside.

The Parrot and Human design also incorporates clever storage solutions and hidden doors to maintain a clean and clutter-free environment. The bedroom is designed with rustic earthy colors and bright white tones, creating a serene and soothing atmosphere for relaxation. Warm light emanates from the head of the bed, further enhancing the calming ambiance.

Completed in June 2022 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, the Parrot and Human design is a result of extensive research and creative problem-solving. The partitions in the study room and kitchen are intentionally not attached to the ceiling, allowing the parrot to fly freely and fostering interaction between the owners and their feathered friend. Roller blinds are fitted inside the glass partition to maintain privacy when needed.

The design of the canopy posed a challenge that was overcome through the use of high ceilings, ensuring good ventilation and maximizing the living space for the parrot. The sloped triangular roof not only adds aesthetic appeal but also conceals structural beams and air conditioning units, making the design both visually pleasing and functional. The gray mineral paint used on the surface adds depth and richness to the overall color scheme.

The Parrot and Human design is a testament to the power of thoughtful and innovative design. It creates a space where humans and their pets can coexist harmoniously, fostering a deeper connection and sense of belonging. With its unique features and attention to detail, this design truly stands out in the realm of residential architecture.
