Concord: A Safe and Inclusive Home Economics Room

Creating a Learning Space for Collaboration and Inclusion

The whole space is structured by an oval, symbolizing inclusion and togetherness. Students learn in this oval room and build relationships. The Concord design by Design Action provides a safe feeling for students, fostering a sense of peace and warmth. With its unique features and thoughtful planning, this Home Economics Room at Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School aims to create a safe, inclusive, and affiliated atmosphere for students.

Design Action believes that every student has different potential, with various backgrounds and abilities. The Home Economics Room is designed to tap into this unlimited potential and create an environment that supports and nurtures it. The oval shape of the room symbolizes inclusion and togetherness, encouraging students to cooperate and complement each other.

The space is divided into different areas according to the oval structure. In the center is the learning area, surrounded by the laundry area, baking area, preparation area, and cafe area. The cafe area features professional-level coffee machines, allowing students to practice their latte art skills and develop their professional abilities. Additionally, a hidden desk with power sockets is provided for sewing classes. The floor tiles, consisting of light grey, dark grey, and wood grain ovals, visually divide the different areas and correspond to the ceiling, adding interest to the space.

The Concord design covers an area of 1500 sq.ft and incorporates materials such as plastic laminate and tile. The color palette chosen for the room includes white, wood, and lake blue, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere for students to learn and grow.

Design Action's goal was to create a learning environment that goes beyond traditional teaching methods. The Hong Kong education system has historically focused on quantitative measures, neglecting the individual needs of students. The Concord design challenges this approach by providing a user-friendly and unique space that activates a new learning experience. By offering a safe and inclusive environment, students can develop various skills, build confidence, and develop correct values.

The Concord design was completed in February 2022 at Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School. It was created in response to the need for a more effective and student-centered approach to education. The design aims to enhance the efficiency of teaching and learning, foster interpersonal relationships, and equip students with life skills that prepare them for a harmonious society.

Design Action, the creative force behind Concord, is committed to creating designs that prioritize uniqueness, originality, and quality of life improvements. Their work has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2023 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This award acknowledges their outstanding and creatively ingenious design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology.

The Concord design by Design Action is a testament to the power of thoughtful and inclusive design in creating a safe and engaging learning environment. By prioritizing collaboration, inclusivity, and student-centered learning, this Home Economics Room sets a new standard for educational spaces.
