Jaeren: A Contemporary Transformation of a Grandparent's Apartment

Preserving Memories and Embracing Nature

This story begins at Jaeren, a small area on the west coast of Norway known for its beautiful beaches and signature stone fences. Gudbjorg Simonsen, the renowned designer, took on the challenge of transforming her client's grandparent's apartment into a contemporary space while preserving the loving memories from his childhood.

Simonsen, known for her ability to understand and design her client's desires, turned to the nature of Jaeren for inspiration. The raw and genuine materials found in the local surroundings became the foundation of the design. By establishing a connection with the local materials, Simonsen created a warm and welcoming atmosphere that pays homage to the client's childhood environment.

One of the key features of the design is the use of floor-to-ceiling windows that open up the space and allow the outside to come in. Simonsen strategically placed curated elements inside the apartment to create an intimate space without obstructing the views. The result is a seamless blend of the interior and exterior, bringing the beauty of Jaeren's mistful light into the living space.

To honor the memories of the grandparents, Simonsen designed a grand fireplace as the centerpiece of the living area. This fireplace not only provides warmth but also serves as a symbol of emotional connection. The living area is carefully designed around the fireplace, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

The design of the apartment focuses on harmony and repetition, with each room enhancing the other. Simonsen avoided decorative overload and instead used lighting as both a functional and decorative element. The lighting fixtures, carefully chosen to reflect the beautiful light of Jaeren, also serve as art installations.

The overall color palette of the apartment is dark, creating an intimate and cozy ambiance. A splash of fresh green velvet is repeated in different pieces of furniture, adding a touch of color to the space.

Visitors are greeted in the hall, which leads to the lounge and kitchen. The kitchen is designed as a bar, with an island and barstools, and a back wall displaying glasses. The curved back wall, made of corian, creates an intimate space between the kitchen and the curved sofa opposite it. The dining table continues the curved shape, embracing guests and creating a sense of togetherness.

The master suite features a gable that echoes the shape of the kitchen wall. Clad in leather, the curved shape brings a cozy feeling to the space, further enhancing the emotional connection to the client's roots.

The project, which started in January 2021, was completed in June 2022 in Jaeren. Simonsen collaborated with local craftsmen who have a deep understanding of the natural materials from the area. Their attention to detail and craftsmanship added an extra layer of authenticity to the design.

Simonsen's design for the Jaeren apartment is a testament to her ability to create a contemporary space that preserves cherished memories. By embracing the raw beauty of Jaeren and incorporating local materials, she has transformed the apartment into a warm and welcoming home that reflects the client's roots and personality.
