The quest for a typeface that encapsulates both the heritage of the International Style and the demands of contemporary design has culminated in the creation of Arlo Sans. This geometric sans serif is not just a set of characters; it's a study in crafting legibility and personality within the confines of type design. With its open counters and breathable apertures, Arlo Sans stands out for its readability across weights and sizes, a testament to the meticulous attention to detail by its creators.
Arlo Sans is more than a font; it's a versatile toolkit for designers. The inclusion of over 20 stylistic glyphic alternatives offers creative flexibility, ensuring that each application of Arlo Sans is as unique as the project it graces. This typeface, with its robust forms and contemporary flair, is a nod to the past while firmly taking its place in the future of design.
The production of Arlo Sans utilized Glyphs, a premier font creation software, allowing for precision and refinement in the design process. The limited-run type specimen book and box set, printed in 8-color offset digital, are as much a celebration of design as the typeface itself, with a striking 210 x 290 mm format that invites exploration and admiration.
From the initial sketches in March 2023 to the launch in July 2023, Arlo Sans was a journey of exploration and innovation. The design team, led by Robb and Bartoloni, embarked on a research odyssey that delved into the origins of the International Style. Their challenge was to translate the essence of movement into static letterforms, a challenge they met with creative and technical prowess.
Arlo Sans has already made its mark on the design world, earning a Bronze in the A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a testament to the typeface's design excellence and its contribution to the evolution of visual communication. With its unique blend of historical inspiration and modern execution, Arlo Sans is poised to become a staple in the designer's arsenal.
As we celebrate the achievements of Paul Robb and Moira Bartoloni, we also acknowledge the intellectual property rights that protect their innovative work. Arlo Sans is not just a font; it's a beacon of design ingenuity, ready to inspire and transform the written word.
