Cheungvogl Architects' Innovative Aesop I.T Installation: A New Dimension in Retail Design

Exploring the Intersection of Design, Retail, and Interactive Experiences

Unveiling the award-winning Aesop I.T Installation in Hong Kong, Cheungvogl Architects redefine the boundaries of retail design. This unique installation merges architecture, brand identity, and site context, creating an immersive, interactive experience for visitors.

The Aesop I.T Installation, designed by Cheungvogl Architects, is a remarkable example of innovative retail design. The installation, located in I.T, Hysan One, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, was unveiled in mid-December 2011. After a two-week exhibition, the installation was deconstructed and re-formed as a permanent retail space, demonstrating the flexibility and adaptability of the design.

The design concept revolves around the interaction and communication between humans and objects. The spatial organization, operational characters, and material palettes within the space respond directly to the holistic design thinking and adaptation of specific requirements within the given contextual environment. The installation encourages exploration and interaction between visitors, space, installation, and products, creating a dynamic retail environment.

What sets this design apart is the unique use of materials and spatial arrangements. Eight hundred resin boxes are arranged atop steel rods of varying lengths, creating an illusion of each box ascending at its own pace, as if being drawn upward by an invisible thread. Some boxes hold Aesop formulations, while others are designed to reward visitors' curiosity through unexpected sound, scent, and touch. This delicate luminosity imbued in the exhibition space adds a sense of intrigue and wonder, drawing visitors into the space.

The design process incorporated a modular system from the initial stages to create a light and fragile structure without compromising stability. The design of the modular system also included planning, dismantling, and reconstruction of the installation in a permanent location in a different layout. This modular approach allowed the team to construct the installation off-site within two weeks and install it overnight in just 8 hours, demonstrating a high level of efficiency and organization.

The Aesop I.T Installation faced creative and technical challenges, including creating a modular system that could be constructed off-site within a short timeframe, and planning the construction progress so that the installation could be smoothly and organized overnight. Despite these challenges, the team successfully dismantled and re-installed the structure in a different formation and layout in a different permanent location after the two-week exhibition.

The Aesop I.T Installation was recognized with the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The award embodies extraordinary excellence and significantly impacts the world with their desirable characteristics, further cementing Cheungvogl Architects' reputation for architecturally remarkable spaces.
