Spaghetti House: A Casual and Modern Italian Trattoria

Award-winning design by J. Candice Interior Architects

Spaghetti House is a chain restaurant established in the 1980s. The design by J. Candice Interior Architects aims to promote a younger brand image for young families and young adults, inspired by the free-spirited energy in Italian cooking.

Spaghetti House, known for its casual and wit-filled approach to Italian cuisine, has undergone a stunning transformation with the help of J. Candice Interior Architects. The design concept revolves around creating a casual yet modern Italian trattoria, capturing the essence of free-spirited Italian cooking.

The design team drew inspiration from the Italians' casual and carefree approach to cooking, where measuring tools are seldom used during preparation. The goal was to create a space that exudes a sense of fun and vibrancy while also encouraging patrons to have a deeper appreciation and connection with the food served.

The interior features elements such as rusted iron windows, white brick walls, walnut veneer wall paneling, and classic wood ceiling beams. These elements combine to create a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Italian trattorias.

One of the standout features of the design is the tall cabinets that adorn every corner of the space. These cabinets display a wide range of ingredients commonly used in Western cuisine, from fresh tomato sauce to bottles of olive oil and boxes of risotto. This unique display not only adds visual interest but also serves to educate and engage patrons, allowing them to better understand the ingredients that go into their meals.

Adding a contemporary touch to the space, black and white graphics adorn some of the walls. These graphics feature interesting Italian idioms based on daily Italian diet, further enhancing the modern and playful atmosphere of the restaurant.

In addition to the thoughtfully designed interior, the open foyer features a long communal table, perfect for larger parties and fostering a sense of community and togetherness. Spaghetti House is not just a place to dine but also a space to have fun and create lasting memories.

The realization of this design involved the use of various materials, including brick, stainless steel, ceramic tile, laminate, and wire meshed glass. The result is a visually stunning space that perfectly captures the spirit of Spaghetti House.

Completed in June 2013 in Hong Kong, this design project presented its fair share of challenges. Convincing the client of the benefits of an open kitchen, which increased the kitchen area but reduced the seating area, was one of the major hurdles. However, in the end, the decision proved to be a success, attracting a younger clientele and creating a more open and inviting atmosphere.

The design of Spaghetti House by J. Candice Interior Architects has been recognized for its excellence and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2014 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its casual yet modern design, Spaghetti House offers a unique dining experience where patrons can indulge in delicious Italian cuisine while immersing themselves in the vibrant and playful atmosphere. It truly embodies the spirit of free-spirited Italian cooking.
