Contra Vessels: Bringing the Outdoors Indoors

A Unique Blend of Materials and Contrasting Ideas

The Contra vessels, designed by Bem Robinson, aim to bring the outdoor experience indoors through the use of materials, colors, and texture.

The Contra vessels, designed by Bem Robinson, are a collection of pieces that showcase the combination of two differing ideas through materials. Inspired by the desire to bring the outdoor experience indoors, Robinson has created a set of vessels that blur the boundaries between nature and the comfort of the indoors.

The uniqueness of the Contra vessels lies in the choice of materials and the way they are brought together. The base of each vessel is made from zebrano wood or alabaster, representing the randomness and beauty of nature. The cracks and imperfections in the wood or alabaster are then filled with a ceramic resin composite, symbolizing the comfort and perfection of indoor spaces.

The process of creating the Contra vessels involves turning the base material, whether it be zebrano wood or alabaster, and intentionally creating cracks or deformations. These cracks and gaps are then filled with a ceramic resin composite, resulting in a visually striking and conceptually meaningful piece.

The Contra vessels come in various sizes, including a carafe measuring HXW 180mm x 120mm, a small mug measuring 60mm x 50mm, and a large mug measuring 90mm x 70mm. Each vessel is meticulously crafted to ensure a seamless blend of materials and a visually captivating design.

Robinson's research for the Contra vessels involved conducting focus and peer groups, where participants interacted with various outdoor materials. The wood and stone samples stood out, evoking feelings of warmth, homeliness, and a connection to nature. To create a sense of contrast and bring together opposing materials without the need for glue, Robinson mixed ground porcelain with a resin substance, resulting in the unique ceramic resin composite used in the Contra vessels.

The Contra vessels not only serve as functional objects but also as conversation starters and artistic expressions. The contrasting materials and the combination of indoor and outdoor qualities create a sense of intrigue and visual interest.

The Contra vessels project was started in January 2014 and realized in May 2014, utilizing the facilities of Nottingham Trent University. The design has received recognition and acclaim, winning the Silver A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is a testament to the exceptional creativity, technical expertise, and innovation showcased by the Contra vessels.

With the Contra vessels, Bem Robinson has successfully bridged the gap between the outdoors and the indoors, creating a unique and visually captivating collection that brings nature's beauty into our everyday lives.
