The Eclectic Indian Penthouse, designed by Nupur Magdum and Satyajit Bhosle, is a unique and luxurious residence that seamlessly blends Indian heritage with contemporary design. The aim was to create a warm and lived-in home, rooted in Indian culture but still chic and contemporary.
The design of the penthouse prioritizes a sense of authenticity and a reflection of the owners' personalities. The use of wood and rustic finishes, minimal use of glass and steel, and a careful selection of heirlooms, artifacts, and furniture collected over time, create a space that is both elegant and personal.
One of the standout features of the penthouse is the cantilever staircase, which required detailed design and structural fabrication to ensure stability and minimize vibration. The staircase is adorned with a 34 ft. high hand-painted mural inspired by the "Tree of Life," further emphasizing the connection between nature and the indoors.
The penthouse is spread across multiple floors, each with its own purpose and atmosphere. The living and entrance floor, located on the fifth level, offers a spacious and inviting area for relaxation and entertainment. The bedroom and family floor on the fourth level provides a private and cozy space for the residents. The media and entertainment floor on the sixth level is perfect for hosting guests and enjoying leisure activities.
The design also incorporates thoughtful elements to enhance communication and interaction among the residents. Cutouts on the floor slabs facilitate visibility and connection between different levels. Additionally, a dumbwaiter connects the kitchen directly to the pantry on the sixth floor, making it convenient for serving food during gatherings.
Located in Kolhapur, a medium-sized town in Maharashtra, India, the Eclectic Indian Penthouse took 18 months to complete. The project faced challenges due to the limited availability of interior materials and accessories in the town, requiring extensive travel for procurement.
The Eclectic Indian Penthouse is a testament to the designers' dedication to creating a home that is not only visually stunning but also reflects the unique personalities and heritage of its owners. It has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach to interior space.
