MADELEINE: The Illusion of Sophisticated Handcraft

Redefined Sunglasses by Damir Doma - Mykita Gmbh

At first glance, the perfectly round MADELEINE appears to consist of two frames, but a closer look reveals the trompe l’oeil construction as an example of particularly sophisticated handcraft. Made of one piece the frame is essentially folded in half and brought into shape in a series of meticulous steps. The result is a distinctive aesthetic in which two delicate circular lenses hover in front of more solid round rims. Contrasting colors accentuate the layered concept.

The MADELEINE sunglasses, designed by Damir Doma in collaboration with Mykita Gmbh, are a unique and innovative take on eyewear. Inspired by the pince-nez from the early 20th century and the visual reference to clip-on sunglasses from the 1980s, these sunglasses create an illusion and generate another dimension out of flat stainless steel. The trompe l’oeil aesthetic is accentuated by the floating circular lenses before the frame-front.

What sets the MADELEINE apart is its construction. At first glance, it appears to consist of two frames, but it is actually made from one piece of folded stainless steel. The frame is meticulously brought into shape through a series of careful steps, resulting in a distinctive aesthetic where two delicate circular lenses hover in front of more solid round rims. The layered concept is further enhanced by contrasting colors.

The realization of the MADELEINE sunglasses required a combination of modern handcraft and innovative design principles. The flat stainless steel is transformed from bi-dimensional to tri-dimensional, bringing another dimension into the frame. The folding process involves multiple steps, with the frame gradually taking shape and secured inside the outer frame with the help of two flaps. This construction pays tribute to the art of handcraft.

With dimensions of 144 mm width, 140 mm depth, and 55 mm height, the MADELEINE sunglasses offer a touch of eccentricity, elegance, and modernity. They not only provide protection from dangerous UV light but also allow wearers to express their inner eccentric selves.

First exhibited at SILMO 2015, the MADELEINE sunglasses have garnered recognition and accolades. They were awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016, a prestigious honor given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award recognizes the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

The MADELEINE sunglasses are a testament to the power of design and craftsmanship. They combine historical shapes, illusory construction, and modern handcraft to create a truly unique and sophisticated eyewear experience.
