Heart

Poster Series

Design Name: Heart

To begin with oriental philosophy, the initial human heart is simple and kindhearted. But as feelings, language, and emotions are added, it slowly becomes complex. Then opposition, division, and hatred between people follow. At the end, the only thing that doesn't change is change itself. The initial presentation of the heart is like the old saying: "Peaceful minds remain calm eternally, and agitated minds are ever-changing."

Designer Jen-Wei Huang presents the beauty of Chinese characters through the Heart poster series. Chinese characters are ideographical in nature. These two series of posters are typeset by superimposing 525 characters containing either one of the two "xin" radicals ("xin" meaning "heart" in Chinese). Writing systems are like humans in that they interact closely with the heart at various levels of feelings, mental activity, and living conditions. Although a common human experience, this form of expression is uniquely Chinese.

In using the heart radical for the layout of Chinese characters, appropriate thickness is chosen and stacked repeatedly until the word strokes of Chinese characters can be seen. The overall visual length is fine-tuned, and the final presentation gives the feel of an acrylic plate painting.

The physical products of the Heart poster series measure Width 8410 mm x Depth 5940mm.

Narrative Eastern spiritual culture - Different interpretations are given to the beauty and thoughts of Chinese characters.

The project started in August 2015 and finished in October 2015 in Taiwan.

The Oriental culture spirit is derived from Chinese characters. Traditional calligraphy and brushes are not used. Instead, a more modern method is used to present the inherent beauty and spirit of the characters.

All characters are combined using heart radical characters. The most difficult tasks are fine-tuning the words to present relationships, selecting line thickness, and choosing the final presentation effects.

What began with a simple intention is sometimes complicated by emotion and language. As an old saying goes, "Peace of mind brings eternity; feelings bring constant changes." The Heart poster series illustrates how characters are also characteristic of eternity or changes by showing the interplay between Chinese radicals and words and how they have evolved.
