Unveiling the Twin Horse Design: A Blend of Simplicity and Efficiency

Jingyi CAI's Award-Winning Office Design Inspired by the Intricacy of a Broken Watch

Discover the Twin Horse Design, an innovative office space that marries simplicity and efficiency. Created by Jingyi CAI, this design is a testament to the beauty of minimalism and the power of light in transforming spaces.

The Twin Horse Design is an office space located in the commercial center of Hongkong. Spanning an area of approximately 300 square meters, it serves as the headquarters for a young design company. The design stands out for its use of simple colors and lines as design elements. The transparent properties of glass are cleverly utilized to refract light and enrich the space, while the combination of black and white tones adjusts the indoor area's middle tone.

The inspiration behind this design is as unique as the design itself. Jingyi CAI was inspired by the complex parts of a broken watch, which led to the idea of making every space in the project as efficient and simple as mechanical parts. Despite the project's short timeline of only three months, the design process was highly efficient, requiring rational choices of materials and arrangement of each process.

The design employs a lot of glass and metal to divide the space, using light refraction and glass color to add detail to the space. The use of color was inspired by painting techniques, with a large number of intermediate colors and a small amount of dark color for embellishment. The space's height was a challenge, as it had only one window and was almost a closed space. To ensure adequate light, a lot of glass was used to refract light over a longer distance, and 4000K lights were designed to mimic the sun's light.

The project started in May 2016 in Guangzhou and was completed in December 2016. The short timeframe necessitated simulation of everything before construction. All the doors, cabinets, walls, lamps, etc., were built in the factory to minimize construction time. The biggest challenge was embedding ultra-thin glass in a very fine metal frame, which was eventually achieved after testing various materials.

The Twin Horse Design is a study in balance between black and white spaces, breaking the deconstruction of space plane and using simple materials for comparison. It pursues the visual effect of light refraction and space, finding the interaction between people and space through changes in the relationship between space dimensions. This design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
