Wanglaoji Recipe 1828: A Nod to Tradition in Modern Packaging

Unveiling Tiger Pan's Award-Winning Beverage Design

Immerse in the intriguing story of Wanglaoji Recipe 1828, a beverage design that marries tradition with innovation. Created by renowned designer Tiger Pan, this design has garnered international acclaim, bagging the prestigious Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2018.

Wanglaoji Recipe 1828 is not just a beverage; it's a testament to the rich history of the brand. The design inspiration stems from the brand's journey, its commitment to purity, and its dedication to the art of traditional medicine. The package illustration, laid out like a scroll, narrates the brand's historical inheritance and development, offering consumers a glimpse into its storied past.

What sets this design apart is its unique ability to decode the 189-year history of the secret recipe of Wanglaoji. It employs the traditional artistry of Chinese serial pictures to reveal the ancient and mysterious world of Chinese medicine. The red tinfoil paper cap, a nod to the past, enhances the ritualistic experience of opening the beverage while maintaining hygiene.

The design realization technology involves spot-color printing on an aluminum can, with the red paper cap made of aluminum-paper. The technical specifications of the design are as follows: Width 72mm x Height 117mm x Diameter 65mm x Capacity 310ml. This intricate design process was executed by a team comprising Tiger Pan, Illustrator Ping Yi, and Assistant Longfei Xiao.

The design interaction is as thoughtful as the design itself. The red paper cap on the can ensures hygiene and negates the need for a straw, making it environmentally friendly. The design was conceptualized in Shenzhen, proofed in Shanghai, and produced in Guangzhou, between June and September 2017.

While the product is priced higher than other offerings from the brand, the design research revealed that most herbal tea packages looked traditional and somewhat dull. The team decided to leverage the higher price point to create a design that was both elegant and high-end, setting it apart from the competition. The biggest challenge was controlling the width of the numerous lines in printing, but this did not impact the overall aesthetic.

In conclusion, Wanglaoji Recipe 1828 is more than a beverage design; it's a celebration of tradition, history, and the art of Chinese medicine. It's a testament to the brand's commitment to quality and innovation, and a shining example of how design can tell a story. The Silver A' Packaging Design Award is a well-deserved recognition of this remarkable design.
