Cocoon: A Unique Wine Rack Inspired by Nature

An Artistic Fusion of Form and Function

Designed by Moritz Proell

Inspired by the natural cocoon of butterflies, the Cocoon wine rack by Moritz Proell is a stunning piece of furniture that seamlessly blends art and functionality. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this design showcases the beauty of wine while providing a unique storage solution.

The concept behind Cocoon stems from the designer's fascination with how nature protects its most valuable elements. Just like the delicate butterflies that find refuge in their cocoons, the leather flaps of this wine rack gently cradle the bottles until they are ready to be enjoyed. The choice of oak as the primary material pays homage to the traditional wine barrels, while the infinity shape symbolizes the lengthy process of wine production.

What sets Cocoon apart is its abstracted form of an infinity loop, crafted from solid oak. The cubic concrete base adds a contrasting volume and stability to the design. Forged steel bars run through the vertical parts of the frame, allowing the leather flaps to hang gracefully. Each flap can accommodate up to six wine bottles, creating a visually striking display reminiscent of the hidden beauty within a cocoon.

The realization of this design involves a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques. The concrete base is cast to provide the necessary weight and stability. The oak frame is meticulously assembled using tongue and groove joints, ensuring durability and structural integrity. The steel bars are carefully inserted between the wooden pieces, securing the leather flaps in place.

With dimensions of 300mm x 300mm x 1800mm, Cocoon is a statement piece that demands attention. Its harmonious blend of materials, including wood, concrete, and leather, creates a high-end aesthetic that complements any living space. This unique wine rack not only serves its functional purpose but also stands as a work of art in its own right.

Interaction with Cocoon is effortless and intuitive. Users have the freedom to choose the number of bottles stored in each leather flap, with one or three bottles being the optimum for visual appeal. The design allows for a maximum of six bottles per compartment, providing ample storage space for wine enthusiasts.

The Cocoon wine rack project commenced in April 2017 and was completed in October 2017 in Linz. Throughout the design process, the team faced various challenges, including creating a reinterpretation of a wine rack that encompassed all aspects of wine production and storage. The shape and structure had to strike a balance between simplicity and excitement, while the choice of materials was crucial in achieving the desired aesthetic.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Cocoon was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that are well-crafted, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Cocoon's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

With its captivating design and impeccable craftsmanship, Cocoon is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and lifestyle. It serves as a reminder that even everyday objects can be transformed into extraordinary pieces that enhance our living spaces.
