The Art of Storage: A Modernist Approach to Spatial Design

Creating Neat and Generous Spaces with ChiiYang Chen

Inspired by the desire to classify and unify various objects, ChiiYang Chen has designed a storage solution that not only maximizes living space but also creates modernist spatial forms. With a focus on functionality and aesthetics, this design seamlessly integrates storage into the overall design of the space, resulting in a neat and elegant environment.

ChiiYang Chen's design tackles the challenge of meeting the storage needs of a large number of items while maintaining a sense of visual continuity and spatial integration. By breaking the original spatial pattern, the design switches the public and private spaces, combining the living room with the dining room and introducing natural light and breeze. The use of uniform wall cabinets creates a gentle and elegant appearance, but upon opening, reveals a new world of storage possibilities.

The main cabinets and panels in wood veneer are carefully selected to realize the modernist style spatial vocabulary. The use of black laminate and black paint creates a striking contrast, emphasizing the spatial linearity. The white painted ceiling serves as a neutral background color, allowing the design elements to stand out.

With a space area of 60 square meters, this design seamlessly integrates the cabinets into the wall decoration, turning them into a cohesive part of the overall design. The styling of doors, cabinets, and walls follows a modernist form, connecting different spaces and visually extending them to achieve continuity and oneness.

The project, which started in September 2016 in Taiwan Yulin, was completed in February 2017. Throughout the design process, the Zhi Design Studio faced challenges in realizing the concept of a continuous spatial vocabulary. Partitioning the length of the space and modulating a large number of cabinets and door panels required meticulous planning and execution. The solution was to use different elements to combine different spaces, creating visual extensions and maintaining the integrity of the design.

The Art of Storage by ChiiYang Chen has been recognized for its innovative approach and practicality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

With its unique blend of functionality and modernist aesthetics, The Art of Storage by ChiiYang Chen showcases the potential of storage solutions to go beyond their traditional purpose and become an integral part of the overall design.
