Poppee: A Retail Space Revolution by Casen Chiong

Creating a Floating Landscape of Jewels in a Concrete Box

Inspired by the natural phenomenon of crepuscular rays, Casen Chiong's Poppee retail space design redefines the conventional shopping experience, transforming it into a visual spectacle. This innovative design has earned the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.

Poppee, a jewelry collection store, is a testament to Chiong's ability to blend art, architecture, and design. The design inspiration came from the Tyndall effect, a natural phenomenon that influenced the logical growth of exhibit racks and became the original type of interior illumination design. This inspiration led to the creation of a golden cloud floating within a concrete box, a unique and striking vision for the brand.

The unique properties of Poppee lie in its innovative use of space. The architect has saved ground space for landscape, with exhibiting boxes hanging in the air, creating a sense of the entire indoor structure floating. These specially designed acrylic boxes, which house numerous brands' jewelries, are located at different heights within visitors' sight and deliver load up through gold stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 13mm. The ceiling shapes a unique geometric cloud through a metal frame formed with a diameter of 2.5mm.

The realization of this design involved the use of materials including metal grid, gold plated metal tube, and acrylic. These were combined deliberately to fit the spatial layout to the dimension of human figures. The design also tactfully arranged the lighting to create a breathtaking and charming environment in this small space, perfectly satisfying Poppee's commercial function of displaying and marketing.

Poppee's design was a result of extensive research and overcoming several challenges. The creative application of different properties of materials expressed the structural force of spatial installation poetically and produced different transparency on every layer. This provided an extraordinary ambient experience to the visitors entering the space.

Poppee was designed and completed in 2016 by Casen Chiong and his team at Atelier Tree. The design studio's chief architect, Chiong, along with architects Pengfei Zhu, Xintong Shi, and lighting designer Honglei Wang, played crucial roles in bringing this project to life. The project's success is a testament to their collective creativity, technical expertise, and innovative approach to design.

In conclusion, Poppee is a revolutionary retail space that challenges traditional design norms and offers a unique shopping experience. Its innovative design, inspired by natural phenomena and realized through a combination of different materials, has earned it well-deserved recognition and accolades in the design world.
