The Essence of Home: A Serene and Timeless Interior Design

Bringing Together Tradition and Modernity

Inspired by the nostalgia of the past and the allure of contemporary living, designers Wei-Ting Chien and Shih-Ting Chen have created a truly unique interior design that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. This interior design project, located in New Taipei City, Taiwan, captures the essence of home and offers a serene and timeless living space.

The designers drew inspiration from the antique table and wooden stool that adorned the greenish walls of the space. Each nick and imperfection on these pieces tells a story, representing the memories and experiences of generations past. This sense of history and personal connection is what sets this design apart.

The highlight of the design is the incorporation of a Washitsu, a traditional Japanese room, which dates back to the Japanese colonial era. The scent of home that fills this space is a testament to the culture and traditions of a bygone era. In a world driven by convenience and glamour, this design pays homage to the simplicity and warmth of a wooden home.

The realization of this design was made possible through the use of innovative technology and materials. The traditional stone wall is juxtaposed with a modern dining space, symbolizing the harmonious communication between generations. The result is a space that exudes both elegance and comfort, catering to the needs and desires of the modern homeowner.

Spanning 138 square meters, this interior design project was a collaboration between Wei-Ting Chien, Shih-Ting Chen, and their team. The designers aimed to create a space that would provide a sense of belonging and tranquility for the owner, who had spent over 20 years working overseas. This space is a sanctuary, a place to call home after a long journey in the bustling world.

The design research behind this project delved into the essence of the era that is cherished and remembered. The display of a tea set and the touch of Japanese traditional Tatami capture the spirit of the past, while the nicks on the wooden furniture continue to tell untold stories. The designers faced challenges in finding the right balance between aesthetic composition and environmental sustainability. Through innovative experiments and a commitment to uniqueness and originality, they successfully integrated technology and lifestyle.

The interior design project received recognition for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This accolade acknowledges designs that embody resourcefulness and authenticity, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The design not only showcases technical and creative skills but also contributes to improving the quality of life.

The pristine texture and color of the wooden walls create a serene environment that envelops the residents, offering inner peace and a respite from the stresses of daily life. The incorporation of ancient-style furniture, stone walls, and tables adds a touch of nature and reminds inhabitants of the simplicity and beauty of life. This interior design project truly reflects the power of nature, refreshing the spirit and allowing individuals to connect with their true selves.
