The name "Utopia" suggests a sense of picturesque refinement and absolute excellence. Furze captured this essence in the gym's logo, which was inspired by the shape of an infinity symbol. This symbol represents the brand's commitment to limitlessly high quality. The logo subtly references the first and last letters of the name, looping the "U" and "A" into an elegant symbol that represents the brand.
Unlike many gym brands that rely on a hard, gritty image, Utopia's brand identity is clean and modern. The brand identity combines gold and warm black tones with white marble textures, creating a sense of freshness, cleanliness, and refinement. This strong sense of customer-care is usually associated with spas and other luxurious health services, setting Utopia apart from its competitors.
The brand identity also includes guidelines for the use of its logo, colours, and typographic hierarchy across a variety of brand touchpoints, including stationery, signage, and digital applications. This ensures a consistent brand image across all platforms.
The design of the identity began in May 2018 and branding and marketing material were continually produced for the launch of the gym in 2019. Despite the challenges of creating a brand that felt truly new and unique in a highly competitive industry, Furze was able to design an identity that has the ability to grow alongside the brand.
In conclusion, Utopia Health & Fitness's brand identity, designed by Lisa Furze, sets a new precedent in the contemporary fitness experience. The design, which won the Silver A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2019, is a testament to Furze's ability to create a brand identity that is not only visually pleasing but also communicates the brand's values and vision.
