Residential House Designed by Wen-Hsiang Chao

This is a residential space planning design project by Wen-Hsiang Chao, known for their innovative and unique designs. The owners of the house wanted to create a space where their children could exercise freely, leading to a simplified interior space with minimal furniture. The design focuses on creating a tranquil atmosphere while still providing all the necessary functionalities.

The main public area of the house features warm pale-colored wood textures and a grey color tone, complemented by architectural concrete. The raw wood dining table, integrated with the kitchen counter, adds a sense of layers to the space. The dark-colored ceiling and simplified lighting further enhance the tranquil atmosphere, creating a fusion of multiple materials and a primitive quality.

The design also prioritizes functionality, with sufficient storage and study areas, as well as a well-planned seniors' room. The overall style of the residence is simple and dignified, creating a refreshingly colored and functional living space for the family.

Located in Hsinchu County, Taiwan, this project showcases the meticulous attention to construction materials and craftsmanship. The living room extends the architectural concrete to the television wall, creating a spacious and visually appealing area. The study area is partitioned by glass, maintaining visual transparency while providing noise isolation. The laminated boards used in the facade design cleverly correspond to the kitchen facade, adding a cohesive element to the space.

One of the design challenges was achieving clear main circulation through an axial symmetric arrangement. The storage wall, with its varying heights, guides the spatial axis and creates visual interest. The extensive use of architectural concrete on the internal wall surfaces allows the owner's collection of paintings to become visual highlights.

This exceptional design was recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. The award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the project, meeting professional and industrial requirements. It is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
