104 Cafe: A Multi-functional Space with a Timeless Design

A Unique Blend of Art, Functionality, and Collaboration

The 104 Cafe, designed by Pei Chieh Lu and Mei Ting Chiu, is a remarkable example of interior design that seamlessly combines art, functionality, and collaboration. Inspired by the concept of time, this multi-functional space offers a unique experience for employees and visitors alike.

The designers of the 104 Cafe aimed to create a space that goes beyond the traditional cafe or cafeteria. They wanted to provide a place where people could not only enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee but also engage in meetings, group work, and creative collaborations. By incorporating the concept of time into the design, the space reflects the ever-changing nature of a modern workplace.

One of the standout features of the 104 Cafe is the art pieces displayed on the walls. These artworks are sourced from a kid's gallery sponsored by the corporation's foundation. This not only adds a touch of love and care to the space but also creates a unique sense of identity for the company.

The realization of the design involved careful attention to detail. From the curved laminate ceiling that guides the eye through the space to the turnable wooden fences at the back, every element was meticulously crafted to symbolize the flow of time. The branding colors were extended into the wooden fences, creating a sense of coherence and depth.

Spanning across 255 square meters, the 104 Cafe offers various functional areas that cater to different needs and timings. The dramatic red color on the walls cleverly divides the space into different service sections, creating distinct layers and enhancing the overall spatial experience.

Operational versatility is a key aspect of the 104 Cafe. It serves as a cafe, a meeting room, and a cafeteria, accommodating different functions at different times. It provides a space for employees to dine, collaborate, and attend workshops or party events. The design seamlessly integrates these diverse activities into a cohesive and harmonious environment.

The 104 Cafe project was completed in July 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, and was exhibited in Shanghai later that year. The design process involved extensive research into the flow of services and the specific requirements of the corporation. The concept of time and the careful selection of design elements were used to define different spatial areas and create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere.

Overcoming the challenges of creating a multi-functional space that responds to the needs of an agile office environment was no easy task. However, Pei Chieh Lu and Mei Ting Chiu successfully conveyed the spirit of the space through their innovative design approach.

The 104 Cafe has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The 104 Cafe is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and enhance the way we work and collaborate. By incorporating the concept of time and creating a multi-functional environment, Pei Chieh Lu and Mei Ting Chiu have created a space that not only serves its practical purpose but also inspires creativity, interaction, and innovation.
