The designers were inspired by the concept of space as a logic, subject to change over time. This idea became the core of their approach to the renovation of the CRRC 1897 Display Center. They sought to create a space that tells a story, rather than focusing solely on functional demands, ensuring that the history of the old factory was not overshadowed by the new design.
The unique properties of the design lie in its prioritization of space perception over functionality. The designers used lightweight materials such as polycarbonate plates and folding sliding doors to create a sense of openness and enhance the contrast between the old brick walls and the new additions. The sliding doors can be completely opened during large-scale events, further enhancing the versatility of the space.
The technical specifications of the design were carefully considered to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the original structure. The designers integrated the mechanical equipment and pipelines of the air conditioner into an intermediate box to avoid damaging the original roof truss. The result is a clean, uncluttered space that respects the building's history while accommodating modern needs.
The renovation project was a significant challenge due to the large size and unique history of the original building. The designers had to balance the need to create an "indoor" space with the reality of the building's "external meaning". Despite these challenges, the team successfully transformed the factory into a demonstration center that tells a story of change and history.
The CRRC 1897 Display Center is a testament to the power of innovative design and thoughtful renovation. It is a space that respects and celebrates its history while looking towards the future, a fitting tribute to the changing nature of the world it has witnessed. The project serves as an inspiration for future renovations, demonstrating how to balance respect for history with the demands of modern functionality.
