Impressionist Treasures: A Revolutionary Experiential Installation

Stefan Canuel's Award-Winning Design Transforms Public Spaces into Interactive Art Galleries

Stefan Canuel's "Impressionist Treasures" is an experiential installation that brings the gallery to the viewer. Inspired by the impressionist painters' practice of outdoor painting, this installation recreates a gallery setting in public spaces, inviting passers-by to immerse themselves in the art. This innovative design won the Silver A' Advertising, Marketing and Communication Design Award in 2019.

The installation's unique properties lie in its ability to generate memorable experiences and reach new audiences. It features a large wooden frame surrounding an outdoor scene with an open easel and an in-progress painting. The installation also includes interactive iPad kiosks where visitors can play an Art Match quiz, further engaging the audience and encouraging them to visit the National Gallery of Canada.

The design process involved extensive research into the Constitution Square audience and the various uses of the lobby. The team sought to transform the lobby into an experience, showcasing the summer exhibition, Impressionist Treasures, with a promotional props display based on their print campaign. The project started in December 2017 and was displayed in Ottawa at the Constitution Square until September 2018.

A significant amount of work went into ensuring that the three-dimensional scenery was faithful to the original work by artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Other design elements were added to enhance the space, such as a faux wood finish around a planter and additional fences. The main NGC logo was also illuminated on the set.

Despite a tight deadline and a limited budget, the team managed to produce a remarkable installation. The fabrication was done off-site at Productions Double Effets two months prior to the installation. The installation took part over two full days at the Constitution Square. The team faced challenges in making the installation free-standing, as nothing could be attached to any part of the building.

Impressionist Treasures is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in transforming public spaces into interactive art galleries. It not only showcases the beauty of impressionist art but also encourages the public to engage with art in a tactile, sensory way. This design is a prime example of how art can be made accessible to all, fulfilling the National Gallery of Canada's mandate.
