Tsarevna: A Modern Russian Apartment with National Traits

Bringing Russian Character to Contemporary Design

The Tsarevna apartment interior, designed by Olga Pogorelova, combines modern aesthetics with traditional Russian elements to create a unique and accessible living space.

Traditionally, interior design in Russia has been associated with luxury and exclusivity. However, Olga Pogorelova aimed to challenge this notion with the Tsarevna project. Her goal was to demonstrate that a high-quality design can be accessible to a wider audience while still incorporating national traits.

The inspiration for Tsarevna came from the rich history and cultural heritage of Russia. Pogorelova wanted to create an interior that reflected the country's traditions and characteristics, but with a modern twist. To achieve this, she utilized historical national plaster and ethnic decor, which became the defining features of the project.

The use of historical national plaster adds a touch of authenticity and nostalgia to the space. Its rough texture and simplicity evoke a sense of tradition and timelessness. This plaster was traditionally used in the decoration of houses in the southern regions of Russia and has now become a distinctive element of Pogorelova's design.

Another key aspect of Tsarevna is the incorporation of ethnic decor. By carefully selecting and integrating traditional elements, Pogorelova was able to infuse the space with a sense of cultural identity. The result is an expressive interior that pays homage to Russian heritage.

Despite its unique features, Tsarevna remains a practical and functional living space. Pogorelova focused on using techniques and materials that are universally applicable. This ensures that the design not only looks visually appealing but also works seamlessly for everyday living.

The Tsarevna project was realized in Moscow, Russia, and took place from 2019 to 2020. The 70 square meter apartment showcases Pogorelova's ability to create a captivating design within a limited space and budget. The total cost of the project was 60,000 euros.

Olga Pogorelova's Tsarevna apartment interior has received recognition for its innovative approach. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate excellence in both aesthetics and functionality, meeting professional and industrial standards.

With Tsarevna, Olga Pogorelova has successfully transformed the perception of Russian interior design. By combining modern elements with traditional motifs, she has created a living space that is both accessible and culturally rich. The project serves as a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary living.
