Engineering Base: A Zen-Inspired Office Space

Indeed Meguro: A Mindful Work Environment for Engineers

The Engineering Base, designed by Cosmos More Co.,Ltd., is a unique office interior that combines Zen-inspired design with the practical needs of a tech workspace. This innovative approach has earned the project a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.

The inspiration behind the Engineering Base was a desire to move away from the stereotypical sharp and edgy design of engineering spaces. Instead, the designers opted for a concept rooted in mindfulness, aiming to improve productivity and provide a comfortable and attentive working environment. The quiet and independent work style of engineers was a key factor in shaping this design.

Indeed Meguro, the second engineering base for Indeed Japan, is a testament to the incorporation of Zen spirits into interior design. The peaceful and calm atmosphere, achieved through a combination of sound-absorbing materials, a soft color scheme, and indirect lighting, helps improve concentration and productivity. These were the main objectives of the client.

The unique features of this office include custom-made mobile hexagon workstations made of corrugated cardboard covered with sound-absorbing felt fabric. These workstations are easily movable and provide enough privacy, reducing the need for walls and maintaining visibility. Other thoughtful design elements include adjusted luminosity to minimize the gap between the brightness of PC screens and the surroundings, promoting healthy vision, and a food warmer to promote blood circulation.

The design process involved extensive research, including the use of a beacon application to scale the population of each area and track how people move around the office. This data was used to create a heat map, informing the design of the unique hexagon workstation unit. The designers also created numerous prototypes to find the most effective sound-absorbing method for these workstations. The result is a layout that perfectly fits the work style of engineers, boosting performance and overall happiness.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was creating a temporary yet attractive secondary engineering base. The designers had to balance two contradictory elements: mobility and richness of space. They overcame this obstacle by designing a one-step detachable partition in-house, achieving quality and mobility simultaneously.

The Engineering Base is a testament to the power of mindful design in creating a productive and comfortable work environment. It's a shining example of how interior design can be used to support the wellbeing and productivity of workers, particularly in the tech industry. The project's success is a testament to the innovative and thoughtful approach of Cosmos More Co.,Ltd., and a deserving recipient of the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
