1821 Vintage Bolgrad: A Sparkling Wine with a Unique Design

Valerii Sumilov's Award-Winning Design Reflects the Essence of Ukrainian Winemaking

In the world of winemaking, the design of the bottle is as important as the wine itself. Valerii Sumilov's 1821 Vintage Bolgrad sparkling wine design, which won the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2023, is a perfect example of this. The design reflects the essence of the southern regions of the Ukrainian coast, embodying light atmosphere, great climate, and good winemaking.

The design was inspired by the city of Bolgrad, located in the Odessa region in the southern Ukraine. Founded in 1821, the city is known for its excellent climate and winemaking tradition. The Bolgrad brand wanted to bring a sparkling wine in a lower and wider bottle to the market, a style more typical of Western producers. The design of the bottle and label set was a comprehensive branding campaign for the TM 1821 Vintage Bolgrad, including bottle design, label set design, and further development of the previously created brand identity.

The unique properties of the design lie in its reflection of the high status of the product and the Bolgrad brand. The design aims to reflect severity and respectability, giving the consumer a sense of belonging to the "high society". It also conveys a sense of celebration, bright lights, and festivity. The design is stylistically consistent with the brand identity, with the embossed logo personalizing the bottle and clearly identifying the brand.

The realization of the design involved advanced post-printing processes for the label, including gold stamping, embossing, and tactile varnish. The use of special art paper, a tactile varnish, foil stamping, and embossing created an overall image of the product that is attractive to the consumer. The necklaces measure 100 mm X 27 mm and the label measures 64 mm X 65 mm, with the paper being Fasson Orion Frozen Diamond Plus.

The design faced several challenges, including reflecting the high status of the product and the Bolgrad brand, and conveying a sense of celebration and festivity. However, the team was able to overcome these challenges and create a design that embodies the essence of the southern regions of the Ukrainian coast, reflects progressiveness, high status, and adherence to European traditions of winemaking.

Valerii Sumilov's 1821 Vintage Bolgrad sparkling wine design is a testament to the importance of design in the world of winemaking. It not only reflects the essence of the southern regions of the Ukrainian coast, but also the high status of the product and the Bolgrad brand. The design is a perfect example of how a well-thought-out design can enhance the consumer's experience of a product.
