International Free Speech Film Festival

Identity Design by Yen Hung Lin

The International Free Speech Film Festival is an imaginary and illegal protest that is located in Tiananmen Square, China. The objective of this design is to deliver vital event information to both English and Chinese speakers within the shortest amount of time, due to the illegal nature of the protest.

The International Free Speech Film Festival, designed by Yen Hung Lin, aims to effectively convey the idea of free speech in a country struggling with censorship. Inspired by the shredder in his office, Lin visually shredded the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Chinese and pasted the small pieces to create a handmade, aggressive atmosphere. The colors white, yellow, and black provoke an urgent feeling in the audience, serving as a cautionary message.

This identity design includes posters, car body design for advertising, and free promotional stickers and caps to distribute. The objective is to deliver vital event information to both English and Chinese speakers within the shortest amount of time, given the illegal nature of the protest. The design was printed using offset printing and HP inject printer in San Francisco, with the poster measuring 609.6 mm x 914.4 mm.

Yen Hung Lin's background in Taiwan, where the struggle for free speech was fought against strict censorship, influenced his belief in the importance of this project. Researching the history of free speech in the USA and studying movies like "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" by Alison Klayman further informed his design process.

The challenge in this identity design was to immerse viewers in an urgent, aggressive atmosphere while maintaining visual balance. The result is a unique design that effectively captures the essence of the International Free Speech Film Festival.

Yen Hung Lin's International Free Speech Film Festival identity design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
