Panel with Emotions: A Unique Blend of Art and Architecture

Amee Vora's Award-Winning Design Brings Poetry to Life Through Marquetry

Amee Vora, a renowned designer, has brought to life the poetic world of Rabindranath Tagore through her unique wall paneling design, "Panel with Emotions". This intricate artwork, inspired by Tagore's tender depiction of the mother-child bond in "Champa Tree", has been crafted using the traditional art of wood marquetry, a regional craft of Mysore, Bangalore, India.

The design stands out for its depiction of a dense Frangipani grove, a scene that unfolds across a 48 ft long and 9.5 ft tall canvas. The artwork, which connects a children's room to their parents' room, uses woods of different varieties to create depth and semi-precious stones to represent the Champa flowers and birds, adding a surreal touch to the landscape. This unique blend of art and architecture has earned Vora the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2018.

The realization of this concept was made possible through collaborations with artisans and craftsmen. The process involved preparing teak wood panels on-site, sketching the design on tracing paper, and then transporting the panels and the sketch to the workshop. Here, the craftsmen inlaid pieces of Mahogany, ebony, cherry, and walnut on the teak wood to add depth to the landscape. The panels were then inlaid with Mother of pearl shell to depict the Champa flowers and the birds. The final product was achieved after oiling and buffing the panels.

The design posed several challenges, primarily due to the geographical distance between the site and the workshop. Ensuring the natural qualities of the materials were well-engineered to achieve the desired final product required meticulous planning and coordination. However, the end result is a testament to Vora's dedication and craftsmanship.

The design's unique properties and the narrative it weaves make it more than just a decorative piece. It serves as a reminder of the warm, emotional bond between a mother and child, and the joy and whimsy of childhood. The use of wood textures and colors, along with a lavish material play, add a vital dimension to this design story.

In conclusion, "Panel with Emotions" is a remarkable example of how art, architecture, and design can come together to create something truly unique and meaningful. It is a testament to Amee Vora's creativity and skill, and a worthy recipient of the Silver A' Design Award. The design serves as an inspiration for others in the field, demonstrating how traditional crafts can be seamlessly integrated into modern interiors to tell a story and evoke emotions.
