The Grand Hyatt Dalian is not just a restaurant, but a multi-functional space divided into three key areas: eating, drinking, and entertaining. Each area has its own distinct identity, yet continuity is maintained throughout. The eating space, named Ocean, offers a stunning ocean view during the day, while at night, a show kitchen installation becomes the focal point. The entertaining floor is more intimate and luxurious, featuring expensive furniture, bespoke lighting, and a bubble wall feature installation.
What sets this design apart is its innovative use of traditional Chinese window screen patterns. Chu saw the entire space as a grand apartment abode for different families. The window screen elements link all functions together while maintaining individuality. The screens create a unique play of light and shadow, transforming the space from dawn till dusk.
The realization of this design was achieved by embracing the high space of the restaurant. Against the windows is a three-story atrium, featuring a modern interpretation of a traditional Chinese screen pattern. Made from ultra-thin, reduced weight aluminum sheets, these screens are arranged into boxes around the space, providing an interesting experience for guests.
The design process began in 2015 and ran through to 2016, with the Grand Hyatt Dalian officially opening in February 2017. The project faced several challenges, including Dalian's cold winter and the need to create a destination that would attract guests year-round. The space's height was another challenge, which Chu chose to embrace while maintaining the individuality of the dining, drinking, and entertaining spaces.
This design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Chu's design for the Grand Hyatt Dalian is a testament to her ability to blend traditional elements with modern design, creating a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.
